Reused – overview

Two-layered cameo, second half of the 1st century, white sardonyx on a beige brown background. Mask of Silenus seen from three quarters.
Gold frame with openwork decoration, early 3rd century. Cameo dimensions: 15 x 17 mm, with mount: 21 x 25 mm.

At the beginning of the 3rd century cameo was reused, set in an openwork gold coin type medallion. At the time of the Severan’s, these monetary pendants became very popular, they lasted during the Late Empire and were found in the Byzantine period.
The stone is set in an adjusted and projecting box around which is welded a border of pierced and cut gold leaf in the opus interrasile technique.
