Gold plaques with floral ornament, Almaty, Kargaly gorge, Kazakhstan, 3rd-2nd century BCE.
“On other plaques from the Tenlik mound, cut out of foil or beaten off from a matrix and having a hole for sewing, plant motifs predominate: shamrocks, rosettes, lotus buds, shoots. Of particular interest is the motif of “curly vines with flowers”, which finds exact analogues among the ornamental motifs of Hellenistic art: Greco-Bactrian, Indo-Greek, Parthian. The ornamentation of most things has parallels, primarily in the monuments from the Altai mounds of Berel, Shibe, Kotanda, according to the latest data, is synchronous with the monuments of the Pazyryk culture and the Hellenistic art of Central Asia. Some products are close to Issyk, especially those painted with red and black paints.”
