Bust of a woman and a child
1st half of the 2nd century
Limestone, height: 50 cm, width: 40 cm, depth: 24 cm.
Inv. No. B. 2688/9089 Palmyra, Museum.
“Some funeral reliefs in Palmyra show the deceased accompanied by a sister or the wife. Sometimes the mother is depicted with one or other of her children holding a bunch or a bird in her hand. To the left of this woman, the stele is decorated with a shroud suspended from a round wall lamp where a palm is taken. The shroud symbolizes separation but the palm is a sign of victory; victory over death. Above the shroud, an inscription of four lines mentions: “Atam and Malko, son of Shalam Allate son of Briki”, and we therefore see that a filiation exists between the bas-reliefs of the priest Mokimo and that of this woman who was found in the same grave.”
