PARTHIAN AND EARLY SASANIAN “IMPORTS” IN THE BURIALS OF THE NOMADS OF EASTERN EUROPE

“a pendant earring in the shape of a triangular shield, decorated with inlays and with additional pendants in the shape of three-dimensional semi-ovals […]
Not only the pendant’s shape is noteworthy, but also the design of the hinged clasp and the hanging loop. Known parallels to such clasps exist on earrings, albeit from Iran, but without a known archaeological context. However, clasps of similar design had a long history of development in Iran.
The closest parallel to the pendant earring from the Gorely-I burial ground is one of two pairs of earrings with triangular shields that were discovered in 1909 during excavations of burials from the 2nd century the Ashnak burial ground in the Echmiadzin region of Armenia.
The decorative structure of the shield of these earrings is very similar to that of the earring from the “Gorely-I” burial ground: the upper part is occupied by a large teardrop-shaped bezel with a convex garnet inset. Below, above the edge of the shield, are three smaller bezels, oval and teardrop-shaped, arranged in a horizontal row. Pendants in the shape of tetrahedral pyramids are suspended from three loops soldered along the lower edge of the shield. The second pair of earrings from the Ashnak burial ground, instead of the lower small bezels with insets, have two cloisonné-style decorative bands with triangular sockets, and four pendants in the shape of tetrahedral pyramids.
The finds from the Ashnak burial ground also include hinged earring hinges similar to those of the earrings from the “Gorely-I” burial ground. Two pairs of earrings from S.Z. Machavariani’s excavations in Bori, near Kutaisi, Georgia, are extremely similar to the earrings from the Ashnak burial ground. The first pair, like the first pair of earrings from the Ashnak burial ground, has three similar pendants in the shape of tetrahedral pyramids, but the large finials are oval rather than teardrop-shaped. The second pair of earrings has teardrop-shaped finials that occupy almost the entire surface of the finial, with the bottom row of finials missing, and three of the pendants are disc-shaped.”
