Based on an article by M. Treister: Parthian and Early Sasanian „Imports“ in the Burials of the Nomads of Eastern Europe (2nd century BC — 3rd century AD)
Massive gold buckles and belt tips were found in two burials of the Southern Ural (burial mound No. 19/2001 of the Pokrovka 10 burial ground and a burial mound No. 6/1995 of the Berdyanka-V burial ground). Made of gold are decorated with carnelian.
Berdyanka-V – “Cloisonné” style buckles
The carnelians on the Berdyansk belt tip are pre-set in a thin sheet casting and then inserted into sockets on the tip. The inlays on pendants from Hatra, whose date of manufacture is 241 CE, and from Tomb No. 2 in Armaziskhevi (Georgia), dated to the 3rd century CE, are similarly decorated, as is the gold buckle from a burial in Tanais dated to the mid- to second half of the 3rd century CE. Pokrovka 10
“V. Yu. Malashev rightly compared the Pokrovka buckle with the find from burial No. 905/1985 of the Samtavro necropolis, noting the peculiarities of the bezel attachment and the design of the edge of the shield, which, in his opinion, indicate that the buckle was made in an Iranian workshop in the first half to mid-3rd century AD […]
The design of the end sides of the frame with rows of soldered grain balls also supports the supposed Iranian origin of the buckle.” [M. Treister]
