Silver medallion from Sisian, Armenia, 2nd C BCE [D/B]

Silver medallion with an image of an eagle clutching a wild cat (a panther), and a snake. Dated to the 2nd century BCE, excavated in Sisian, Syunik region of Armenia.

“Two gilt silver medallions showing representations in high relief. One features an eagle looking backwards while grasping a panther in its claws, with a writhing snake beneath it. The other medallion shows the bust of a goddess of victory. Her coiffure ends in sickle shapes on her forehead.
50 BC until the beginning of the Common Era, Sisian.

The Golden Eagle was important motif on the Armenian highland, as well as many of the Armenian Dynasties [ King Tigran II the Great].
