“1–2nd century AD. Gold, silver, leather, metal, wood. Sokolova Mohyla mound near the village of Kovalivka, Mykolaiv region. Excavations by G.T. Kovpanenko, 1974.
The fan consists of a wooden disk and a silver handle. The disk is covered with leather that was painted red. In the center of the disk, on both sides, two small flat bronze mirrors are fixed, between which the remains of wood and leather have been preserved. The end of the fan disk and the mirrors are edged with gold ribbons with a relief floral ornament, which were attached to the base with silver nails. At the point where the handle and the disk connect, on both sides, there are round silver gilded plates with a high-relief image of male heads. The silver handle with flutes ends with an image of the head of a sacrificial animal, possibly a ram. The discovery of a fan in a burial is unique.”
